The UAE alone imports USD 228.42 million worth of Salmon

Healthier lifestyles, high economic development and population diversity have all played their part in fueling the region’s Salmon demand. Consumers are looking for memorable experiences through luxury-eating and are willing to pay more to eat better. Famous for high quality salmon exports; Norway will once again be represented at SEAFEX via the Norwegian Seafood Council. Ngelill Jacobsen, project manager for new markets at the Council, said: “The Middle East region is an important part of the focus on new markets for Norwegian seafood.”

Norway was responsible for introducing salmon for raw consumption to Japan in the 1980’s. Previous to that, the preferred fish for sushi and sashimi in Japan was tuna and sea bream. 

Sushi is in fact the fastest growing seafood dish in restaurant menus globally.* The sushi market in the UAE is driven by the country’s cultural diversity, where 85% of residents are expats.  Frequent travelers, multilingual and conscious about sustainability, the youngsters in the region are driving a bigger demand for new products, responsible brands and innovative dining experiences.
